A closer look: wedding traditons

Because we live in an amazing country we get to experience and learn all the traditions that every culture has for Weddings! The history and the past behind these traditions are unique and each very personal to that Bride, groom, and Family, and friends! Knowing those traditions helps give all of us a sense of pride for every culture, and a look into others past, present, and future!

Chuppah or referred to as the Bridal Canopy is a symbol of the couples first home. Much like the Mikvah, the chuppah is a Jewish tradition. It is a structure that has four poles with a cloth material that the Bride and Groom stand under during the ceremony.

Candles or torches stand for the protection of the couple. It usually means the ceremony has started, and signifies protection over the home, and the new life of the married couple. It also stands for clearing out negativity or “evil”

The Cup stands for a symbol of the couples union. When the couples share from the cup this starts their life together where they are joined as one. Eating and Drinking together are worldwide traditions of spiritual union.

Breaking the Glass originally a Jewish tradition has been used by other cultures as a symbol of closure. Breaking the glass wards off evil ghost, and reminds the Bride and Groom that relationships are fragile, and should not be easily broken. It symbols a great finale, and after the glass is broken the couple will kiss and shout “siman tov v’mazel tov!”

Traditions are part of our culture and they are what make up America! Stay tuned for next month's look into a different culture.
