A closer look: wedding traditons

Because we live in an amazing country we get to experience and learn all the traditions that every culture has for Weddings! The history and the past behind these traditions are unique and each very personal to that Bride, groom, and Family, and friends! Knowing those traditions helps give all of us a sense of pride for every culture, and a look into others past, present, and future!

Chuppah or referred to as the Bridal Canopy is a symbol of the couples first home. Much like the Mikvah, the chuppah is a Jewish tradition. It is a structure that has four poles with a cloth material that the Bride and Groom stand under during the ceremony.

Candles or torches stand for the protection of the couple. It usually means the ceremony has started, and signifies protection over the home, and the new life of the married couple. It also stands for clearing out negativity or “evil”

The Cup stands for a symbol of the couples union. When the couples share from the cup this starts their life together where they are joined as one. Eating and Drinking together are worldwide traditions of spiritual union.

Breaking the Glass originally a Jewish tradition has been used by other cultures as a symbol of closure. Breaking the glass wards off evil ghost, and reminds the Bride and Groom that relationships are fragile, and should not be easily broken. It symbols a great finale, and after the glass is broken the couple will kiss and shout “siman tov v’mazel tov!”

Traditions are part of our culture and they are what make up America! Stay tuned for next month's look into a different culture.

Marriage vs a Wedding

Planning a wedding can be overwhelming. You have many to-do lists; venues to visit, dresses to try on, cakes to taste, flowers to choose, and many more things on top of that! Therefore, you ask yourself “where do I begin” and “how do I not drive my self crazy planning my wedding.”

First sit down with a pen and paper and write down all the emotions you are feeling. This is a great start, you’re mentally preparing yourself for marriage first. Then you can prepare to deal with the task of getting to your big day, and actually enjoy the process!

Some things you may be dealing with emotionally are:

·Becoming an adult, because marriage means you are mixing what you want in life with the things that your other half wants. You are agreeing to come to a compromise.
·Letting go of being single is also something you are going to have to work through, for some people it is an easy decision, for others it takes some time to get used to!
·Fears about marriage and commitment, some people have them, and others don’t, but ask yourself this, you may not realize you have these fears until you think about it.
·What is a wife? (Or a Husband) Ask your partner what you each expect from the other. Sit down and really talk about what you both want in life. Do you both want children? Are you both going to work? Where do you want to go in life, and so on.
·Wedding day issues…what do you expect to happen, what do you want to happen, and what are some things that may go wrong? Preparing yourself for these will help to alleviate stress!

It is important to really recognize what areas are affecting you the most, so you can start to process the emotions that are linked to that issue. Once you recognize all these issues, it’s important to work through them one at a time. This will help you stay focused when the sense of being weighed down arises.

When you have prepared yourself emotionally, you still have to plan your wedding! This is when you have every friend, family member, co-worker, and stranger on the street telling what to do, and how YOU should plan your wedding! Write down what you and your spouse expect. Pick your colors, places you may want to get married, guest size, etc., and make sure these decisions are made by both of you first. Then you can start letting friends and family get involved. Planning a wedding should be fun and exciting, and preparing yourself mentally is a great start.

Applause

Thank you for helping put together such an amazing event. A few of
the many many compliments we got..." everything ran so smoothly,"
"this is the best wedding I have been to!" "you seemed so relaxed the
entire time," "haley was professional and seemed to have everything
we ever thought we needed on the day of the wedding" I couldn't have
pulled it off without so much help from you and terri, especially
knowing that there was a morning event scheduled at La Colombe d'Or.
We highly recommend your full service to package to future brides! The
vendors you chose were amazing, including DJ Tera and MC Wayne. We
absolutely loved them! Our guests were like, "how did you find this
guy?" And the best part was seeing Kevin's 85 year old grandma doing
the cho cho train with us! Lisa was spectacular and I was sooo happy
with the flowers. She knew exactly what I was looking for and went
several steps further to make some spectacular pieces.

The Weird World of Weddings

A lot of traditions go into a wedding, some we just accept and never question, but when we do…things can get weird!

The boutonnière- a flower worn on the lapel of a groom’s tuxedo – pretty yes, but it was originally placed there so the flower would be close to the nose in case the lovely bride smelled! (not a lot of emphasis on hygiene back in the days!)

Bridesmaids- committing to your friend to wear a random colored dress (that may cost an arm and a leg and never be seen again!) is actually a much easier deal. In older times, the bridesmaids dresses resembled the wedding dress so evil spirits would attack the bridesmaids instead of the bride!

The bride is on the left side of the groom so that his right arm is free to sword fight! Darn those dragons!

Stay tuned more to come…

Colors- be bold!

Event Colors Set Your Tone

Choosing the colors for your event can be a little intimidating. It sets the décor and tone for the entire evening. From flowers to linens and decorations, color plays a big part. Here are a few hints to make the process of picking a color easier.

Decide what time of year your event is to take place. Once you have that, the seasons make for a great guide in choosing colors. In summer and spring, they tend to be lighter. While in fall and winter colors are likely to be darker.

Put into question where the event will be held, either indoors or outdoors. If held indoors consider the interior. What is the color of the carpet and the walls? You don’t want your colors to clash with the interior but to complement. If it is outdoors, recreate colors that already exist in the scenery.

Also, decide what atmosphere you are trying to set. Whether it is a romantic setting go with a soft color pallet or to add a dramatic feel go towards dark colors in the décor.

Color is very important and can be used in many different ways. It is always good to have a few colors to complement each other. Having one color can be a little boring, but having too many can be overwhelming. Using two or three colors is a good medium and will have just the right amount of color needed to make the wedding look amazing.

EEK! AKK!

EEK! AAK! Yes, it’s springtime, which is cleaning time, so what is that hideous dress lurking in the back of your closet? Is it the world’s tackiest bridesmaids’ dress?

Is it fluorescent taffeta ? A terrible color, all ruffles, dated, poofy sleeves or another terribly funny attribute we missed? Put that dress on and send us a picture. We invite you to join us in “The Tackiest Bridesmaids’ Dress” Contest. (Feel free to smudge out your face to protect the innocent.) We will be announcing the winner on April 1, appropriately April’s Fools Day! Stay tuned for contestant updates, pictures and prizes.

Send in a picture of the dress, the date you had to wear it, any other details that would make it even funnier, and your contact information. Also, please let us know if we have permission to post the picture if you are chosen as a finalist. Feel free to also send in prom, wedding or other formal dress pictures. Please send information in to info@envogueevents.com or call for more details 713.861.0101.

If it is time to donate the dress, contact your local Fairy Godmother Project – Tailors can make anything beautiful again :)

Adding your own distinctive touches to your wedding

A wedding is one of the most important times in a person’s life. There are many little touches that can make a wedding unique in its style. From the colors you choose, to the arrangements of flowers, or even the matchless venue you have chosen for that special day. There are so many options available to make your wedding truly one of a kind. Some interesting new trends are arising, one being The Candy Bar! This is a fun new distinctive way of personalizing your taste. You can take everyone’s love of candy and match it to your own style. For example your wedding colors are pink, and brown. You can tie in candies to accent your colors. Say you also want some dimension in your wedding; you can tie in different levels and styles of vases to put your candies in! Another way to personalize your wedding is to get lighted or a sticker monogram for your dance floor. Usually your dj or florist can produce this. It just adds that little extra something, and wows your guest. As we all know ladies shoes are always one of our biggest accessories! Having a fun colored shoe under your wedding dress is neat for pictures and gives it a little pop. Different shades of white dresses can be boring or drab, but add in a Tiffany blue shoe, or a magenta pink shoe and it gives for a more fun glamorous look. As you also know Photography is a huge part of our wedding, because it captures the moments, memories, and evokes the emotions of the event. So instead of traditional staged photos have your photographer capture the candid photos. Those are the most real ones, whether it is your hugging your grandma with a tear in your eye. To old friends catching up, and laughing in the moment. Candid photos can really bring those feelings to life! Weddings beyond doubt are an amazing event, so why not make them more special by adding your own individuality!

Recent Press

On Sept. 13, Hurricane Ike made landfall in Texas, tearing through Houston and surrounding areas with brute force, leaving destruction in its wake. Among those affected by Ike were many couples whose wedding dates happened to coincide with the hurricane’s devastating onslaught, along with countless venues and vendors contracted to provide services for these weddings...

Haley Hughes, [Candice Graves]
En Vogue Events
“ Amanda and her fiancé Tim, were planning their wedding at Chateau Polonez for Sept. 13. We all watched as the hurricane neared. Then Thursday we realized there was no way we could expect all of their friends and family to travel with the storm looming.

On Thursday evening, Amanda’s fiancé turned to his almost-wife and asked her if she wanted to wake up married on Sunday, or postpone everything.

They decided that the whole point was to start their life together, so they did a quick ceremony at Prince of Peace church on Friday morning before the storm came.

They turned their rehearsal dinner, scheduled at a hotel for later that Friday, into a mini reception, holding it at lunchtime instead of the originally scheduled dinner, because the hotel was going to house people evacuating from the hurricane. They found a cake vendor, who had cake sitting around from the other cancelled weddings, but was not far from the rehearsal dinner site, so she got the bride’s colors and made a beautiful wedding cake. The florist was able to drop off all the flowers—which were originally made for a reception size of 300—so there were flowers everywhere.

There was a little boy staying at the hotel who was celebrating his birthday, so our bride and groom shared their wedding cake as a birthday cake.

Now they are enjoying their honeymoon, as a married couple. Upon their return we will be doing a ‘re-enactment’ of the ceremony and then having the big blow-out reception on Oct. 25 at Chateau Polonez.”
